Trouble Posting

I'm having trouble editing my blogg, I cannot change the text or the size. My last post is at the largest font possible and its appearing very small. So apologies to everyone who reads it, I guess I'm not as good with computers as I thought I was.

Critical Reflections

Module 2 of the BAPP course has given me the chance to reflectively look at my current professional practice and where I intend on taking this inquiry. Being given another chance to do this module gave the chance to take time and think about what I wanted my inquiry to be about. Whilst thinking about my inquiry plan I knew that I had to have an inquiry that related to my current practice. With that said these questions came to mind; how practical will it be? Who will benefit from it? And how will I benefit from it (Appendix A)
Time management has played a big part in my inquiry plan, being able to develop a possible inquiry has taken a lot of planning and prioritising. This time around I was able to really grasp the importance of blogging; I made sure to blog my thoughts and my progress of the development of my Professional Inquiry Plan. (Appendix B)
My previous way of thinking was not working, after discussions with my adviser I started to change my way of thinking. I my inquiry had to me clear and concise. (Appendix C)
Creating a SIG has been changing, although some of the BAPP are in a similar line of work it has been hard to get my SIG going. My SIG did not have much of a response. (Appendix D)

Professional Ethics

Part 5 of the tasks in module 2 focused on the more Ethical side to the inquiry (Appendix E). I found that because I will be working with young people I will have a lot more codes of conduct to adhere to.
From reading the Ethics part of the module I have learnt that ethics play a large part in my inquiry, at first I did not completely understand what ethics were. My lack of understand was clearly due to not correctly reading reader 5 and not asking for help when it was needed. The campus session on Processional Ethics helped me to gain a greater understanding of what ethic where and how it was relevant to my inquiry. (Appendix F)

Tools of Professional Inquiry

Being able to pilot questions was quit hard at first as not all members of staff were in at the same time; I had to make sure that I could get a sufficient amount of staff together just to ask a few questions. Before the questions were asked I made sure that I explained my Professional Inquiry plan to them, once this was done I asked them my planed questions.(Appendix G)

Summary

During this process I’m finding that I am learning new things not just about that Young People, I am learning more and more about Youth Work (Appendix H). By reading more pieces of literature biased around my inquiry, I will be able to gain a further understanding. I plan to continue blogging my process as well as blogging. Becoming a Youth worker would not have been something I would have seen myself doing a few years ago nevertheless I am enjoying being a Youth worker and I am ready to conduct my inquiry.

Further questions

· How do feel the Youth Sessions could be enhanced?

· Would the girls benefit from having for girls only sessions which focus more of female bases activities?

· How would you describe the behaviour of the girls during the sessions?

· Have you noticed any change in behaviour with the young people when the sessions have been move to a different room/location?

· Should there been more youth sessions outside of the youth room?

. Do you feel that having a smaller amount of young people taking part in activities the young people?

Pilot interview with a colleague

This pilot interview was to test some of the questions that I had in mind. I had noticed that the dynamic in the behaviour of the girls would often change depending of the amount of girls. Some of the girls who spent more of there time engaging with the boys seemed to get on with the activities without a hitch. The girls who only wanted to engage with others took long to get into the activity as they would wait for what some might call 'the leader' of the group to give the go ahead. This is something that I had notice quite Frequently in the youth session and I wanted to find if any of the other youth workers had noticed it to. This then lead me to ask;

Do think that the girls behave differently when they are in larger groups?

Colleague: yes, I can see a change in behaviour when the girls are in a bigger group.

Me: do you think that there hormones might be playing a part in this?

Colleague: you can tell the difference between the hormonal girls.

Me: I remember being that age and I was such a nightmare, I was constantly falling out with my friends. Socially I was bouncing from one crowd of girls to the next; I had friends I liked, friends I didn't and I had friends who seemed fake. Did you experience this?

Colleague: I did and I didn't as I was more of a tomboy I didn't really get into to much trouble with girls. Most of my friends were boys, the boys I hung-out with behave differently. If they disliked each other they would speak to each other whereas you could have two groups of girls who hated each other and they would still seem like the best of friends.

Me: I understand what you mean it's as though with girls there is a constant need to be accepted. From my own experience my behaviour would change depending on the group of girls I hung around with.

Benefits of frist aiders

I've been reflecting on a few incidents that have happened, both within my role as a youth worker and as a sales assistant. Becoming first aid trained has never been something that I felt I needed however after a few incidence which required a first aider, I feel that having first aid training this would be something I'd benefit from. Working with young people I find that as they tend to be carefree this then leads to more accidents, by being first aid trained I will then be able to assist. At the moment all I know is the recovery positions and this may not be enough when working with young people. Most companies require at least one trained first aider on site. I've been browsing around on what kind of first aid courses and I found a few charities that off free first aid training, I think I should look further into it and then hopefully take training. Being first aid trained is something that can benefit myself and could possible help someone else; I don't know why it has taken me so long to realise the importance of first aid training.
